An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Position That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Because my travel mate was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
