The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
