In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
