The Video Platform Offers Users Power to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that enables them to lessen the quantity of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 bn AI videos.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the coming weeks before a global launch. This development comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by new video-generation tools.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that nearly a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on another major platform primarily display clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is considered mass-produced AI material, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that many people appreciate content created using AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we aim to provide users the ability to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” said a company executive.

Scale of AI Content

The platform announced that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as artificially created. In total, over 100 m videos are uploaded to the platform daily, making AI-generated material a limited percentage of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they view by using the “manage topic” setting in the platform and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be modified under the tool include current affairs, clothing, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s guidelines require content makers to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it bans malicious AI impersonations of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its terms of service.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth attach an “AI-made” label to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This action is aimed to stop users from trying to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is additionally launching a $2m awareness program for specialists and organizations to create educational content about ethical AI use. This program will support educational bodies specializing in teaching coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, amid debate over intentions to lay off hundreds of review team members in the UK. It is set to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A company official clarified that human moderation would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by eliminating the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. The platform stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we additionally believe it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference work at speed.”
