New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
